Financial markets and economic analysts reacted with reassuring sentiment following the appointment of Suahasil Nazara as Minister of Finance by President Prabowo Subianto on September 14, 2026.
As reported by several local media, the transition from former minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa was met with market stability, as investors welcomed Suahasil's return to the helm of Indonesia's fiscal policy. Following the official swearing-in ceremony at the State Palace, domestic equity indices recovered initial losses, reflecting confidence in the continuity of national economic management.
Market experts pointed to Suahasil's extensive background as former Deputy Finance Minister and Head of the Fiscal Policy Agency as a key factor in steadying market expectations. In an analysis reported by Antara News, economist Gafmi observed that the leadership shift was received constructively by institutional investors and macroeconomic analysts
"The change in leadership at the Finance Ministry from Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa to Suahasil Nazara has generally been met by markets with relatively stable and slightly positive sentiment, which can be described as reassuring," Gafmi said.
Gafmi added that market participants are well acquainted with Suahasil's track record and commitment to fiscal prudence, noting that the transition reduces policy uncertainty and supports stability across key financial systems.
Academic and market researchers highlighted that the primary driver of positive market sentiment centers on fiscal certainty and the integrity of the state budget, known locally as the APBN. Rosdiana Sijabat, professor of business economics at Atma Jaya Catholic University, underscored how market participants appreciate a disciplined approach to public finances.
"A prudent fiscal approach is likely one of the things appreciated by the market. Amid current fiscal pressures, the challenge is not simply to pursue aggressive policies, but to maintain fiscal prudence while creating room to support economic growth," Rosdiana stated, as quoted by The Jakarta Globe.
Similarly, Phintraco Sekuritas Head of Research Ratna Lim noted that the change in leadership is expected to reinforce fiscal discipline and ensure that the state budget deficit remains safely below the statutory ceiling of 3 percent of gross domestic product
Addressing market players directly after his inauguration, Minister Suahasil moved swiftly to quell market speculation and emphasize policy continuity.
"In my view, this is not a change, but simply a continuation," Suahasil told reporters at the State Palace. "I have been part of the Finance Ministry all this time, so we will continue working."
