Visa in Indonesia

A Visa is a document that proves a person's permission to enter and stay in a country for a specified time period. Unlike the passport issued by the applicant's country of origin, the visa is issued by the destination country.

A Visa from the Republic of Indonesia is a written statement that is either manually or electronically provided by an authorized official containing a permission to travel to the territory of Indonesia and becomes the basis for granting a residence permit, as regulated in Article 106 number 1 of Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation. Other than that, provisions regarding visas are also regulated in the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 6 Year 11 concerning the Immigration Law.

There are many different types of visas for Indonesia. The type of visa required depends on the visitors’ nationality, the amount of time they plan to stay in the country, and whether they require a single or multiple entry visas.

The purpose of the trip will also affect the type of visa that the visitor need, whether for tourism, business, or transit activities or for another motive. Therefore, every foreigner who enters Indonesia must have a valid passport and a valid visa, unless otherwise stipulated by the Immigration Law and international agreements

The following are the types of visas and the requirements needed:

1. Diplomatic Visa

Diplomatic visa is a visa issued for foreign citizens bearing diplomatic passports for the conduct of diplomatic duties/assignments in Indonesia.

2. Service/Official Visa

Service/Official visas are granted to foreigners holding official passports and other passports, including family members, who will travel to Indonesian territory in order to carry out non-diplomatic official duties from the foreign government concerned or international organizations. The granting of diplomatic visas and service visas is the authority of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and in its implementation is issued by foreign service officials at the Representatives Offices of the Republic of Indonesia.

3. Visitor Visa

Visitor visas are granted to foreigners who will travel to the territory of Indonesia in the context of visiting government duties, education, social culture, tourism, preinvestment, business, family, journalism, or in transit before continuing their journey to another country. Visitation visas can also be granted to citizens of certain countries as stipulated under the regulations of the Minister of Law and Human Rights upon arrival at the immigration checkpoint by immigration officials.

This visitation visa is divided into:  

• Single entry visa: This visa is given to foreigners to stay in Indonesia for a maximum of 60 days.
• Multiple-entry visa: A multiple-entry visit visa is granted to foreigners with a 5 year visa validity period to stay in Indonesia for a maximum of 60 days.
• Visa on arrival: A visit visa on arrival (visa on arrival) is given to foreigners to stay in Indonesia for a maximum of 30 days.

4. Limited/Temporary Stay Visa

Limited stay visas granted to foreigners:  

• as clergy, experts, workers, researchers, students, investors, second homes, and their families, as well as foreigners who are legally married to Indonesian Citizens (Warga Negara Indonesia) or WNI, who will travel to the territory of Indonesia to reside for a limited period of time; or
• In the framework of cooperation to work on ships, floating equipment, or installations operating in the territorial waters of the archipelago, sea areas, continental shelf, and/or the Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Limited Stay Visa for Indonesia is a type of “long-stay” visa, despite the name. This is the type of visa that is needed if you want to work, study, join a family member, or retire in Indonesia. For example: Indonesia work visa, Indonesia student visa, etc

Nevertheless, visitors planning to visit Indonesia are advised to use the expedited online visa application if it is available for their travel purposes and period of intended stay. Not only is it quickly processed, it also greatly speeds up the process of entering Indonesia at the border with a pre-approved document.
