Indonesia and Denmark Deepen Strategic Partnership in Energy Transition
22 Apr 2025

Indonesia and Denmark have reaffirmed and expanded their long-standing energy transition partnership with the signing of an updated cooperation agreement, building on their collaboration since 2015. This development was formalized during a bilateral meeting between Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, and Denmark’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, at the Ministry’s office in Jakarta on Monday, April 21.
Minister Bahlil stated that the bilateral meeting was held to evaluate the progress of their existing partnership. He emphasized that cooperation with Denmark would play a key role in advancing the development and use of new and renewable energy in Indonesia.
"We greatly appreciate that for nearly 10 years, the governments of Indonesia and Denmark have accomplished a great deal, particularly in the area of energy development and more specifically in renewable energy," Bahlil remarked.
The meeting resulted in an agreement to expand the scope of cooperation through the signing of a Protocol of Amendment and three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between businesses from both countries. Bahlil explained that these MoUs represent a continuation of the work initiated a decade ago under the Indonesia Denmark Energy Partnership Programme (INDODEPP).
"Denmark is known as one of the countries with extensive experience in managing new and renewable energy, particularly in wind energy. They have the technology, a long history of implementation, and now they have developed solutions to improve energy efficiency," Bahlil said.
The MoUs signed include a joint study cooperation agreement between PLN Indonesia Power and Vestas to explore potential opportunities in meeting Indonesia’s green electricity demand; a joint study cooperation between PLN Nusantara Power and Vestas to assess the development of renewable energy power plant projects in Indonesia; and a cooperation agreement between PLN Indonesia Power and Saltfoss Energy on nuclear energy development in Indonesia.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the partnership between Indonesia and Denmark serves as a model of how renewable energy expansion can align with efforts to strengthen energy independence and resilience.
"I am very pleased that the close cooperation between Denmark and Indonesia is not merely a quick response to current developments, but something we have been building together for many years," said Rasmussen.
