Indonesia has the potential to develop three renewable energy manufacturing sectors, with an economic potential reaching USD 551 billion or approximately IDR 9,146 trillion.

The Executive Director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), Fabby Tumiwa, stated that these three sectors are solar power plants (PLTS), wind power plants (PLTB), and battery energy storage systems.

“Solar power plants could provide an economic value of up to USD 236 billion,” said Fabby during the IESR Study Dissemination and Launch event, which was held virtually on Tuesday, March 25.

Fabby mentioned that the development of wind turbines for PLTB could provide an economic value of up to US$ 75 billion. Meanwhile, the economic development of battery systems could generate an economic value of up to US$ 240 billion.

In addition to offering a significant economic value, the development of the renewable energy manufacturing industry could also open to 9.7 million job opportunities. The largest job opportunities would be in the manufacturing industry in the solar power plant sector, with a contribution of 5.7 million people, followed by battery energy storage systems with 2.2 million people, and wind turbine development with 1.8 million job opportunities.

He emphasized that the renewable energy industry could become part of Indonesia's long-term economic transformation if its potential is maximized. If the renewable energy manufacturing industry develops, Indonesia would not need to rely on economic growth from the sale of raw commodity exports.
