President Prabowo Subianto submitted a Presidential Letter (Surpres) regarding the definitive candidate for the Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) to the House of Representatives (DPR) on Monday (Aug. 10).  

In the Surpres, Prabowo proposed Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for the definitive BI Governor. Destry is currently serving as the Acting Governor of BI, as well as the Senior Deputy Governor of BI. This statement was conveyed by the Minister of State Secretary (Mensesneg), Prasetyo Hadi, during a press conference at the Nusantara III Building, Senayan, Jakarta. 

"The nomination is singular, one name, which is Ms. Destry Damayanti, who is currently serving as the acting governor," Prasetyo said.  

The Gerindra Party politician explained that the submission of the Surpres appointing Destry as the sole candidate for the definitive BI Governor was also bundled with the names of candidates to replace the Senior Deputy Governor and a Deputy Governor of BI. "Because the number is reduced by one," he noted.  

In addition to the Surpres for the BI Governor candidate, the government also submitted a Surpres regarding candidates for members of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and candidates for Indonesian ambassadors to several friendly nations.  

"Going forward, we hand over the mechanism to the House of Representatives in accordance with applicable rules and regulations," Prasetyo stated. 

Prabowo previously signaled that Destry is the right figure to hold the position of BI Governor.  

In front of invited guests, Prabowo posed a question regarding Destry's suitability to continue the leadership at the central bank. "What do you think? Is she (Destry) okay? It will be up to the DPR later," Prabowo said while giving a speech at a mass contract signing event for 62,000 subsidized housing loan (KPR) units across 36 provinces, which took place in Batang Regency, Central Java, on Thursday afternoon, July 30.
