Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast is set to significantly enhance Indonesia's EV infrastructure by planning the installation of up to 100,000 public charging stations (SPKLU) across the country. This initiative was announced following a meeting between the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto and VinFast representatives on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

Indonesian Investment and Downstream Industry Minister, Rosan Roeslani, highlighted that the development of these charging stations is expected to be implemented in stages, with an estimated investment of approximately USD 1 billion for the full 100,000 units.

The initial phase will focus on key regions such as Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali, with plans to expand to other areas in subsequent stages.

In addition to the charging infrastructure, VinFast's EV assembly plant in Subang, West Java, is slated to commence operations next year. The factory, which began construction last year with an investment of USD 200 million, aims for an annual production capacity of 50,000 units.

This strategic move aligns with Indonesia's aspirations to become a hub for EV manufacturing, leveraging its abundant nickel reserves, essential for EV batteries. The government has been actively offering incentives to carmakers, resulting in a recent uptick in EV adoption. Notably, car sales in February experienced a 2.2% year-on-year increase, marking the first rise since June 2023, primarily driven by EV sales.

VinFast's investment is anticipated to further accelerate this growth by addressing infrastructure challenges that have previously hindered EV adoption. Rosan emphasized, “(VinFast) has selected the charging station points. For us, with EV infrastructure, adoption of electric cars can rise."

Beyond the automotive sector, VinFast is also exploring investments in Indonesia's renewable energy landscape, including potential projects in wind and solar energy. These discussions coincide with recent commitments by Indonesia and Vietnam to enhance economic cooperation, following a bilateral meeting between President Prabowo and Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Tô Lâm.

This collaboration between VinFast and Indonesia signifies a substantial advancement in the nation's EV ecosystem, reflecting a mutual commitment to sustainable transportation and renewable energy development.
